You are volunteering at a community health information stall. A young woman asks about a free screening programme for people her age. As you begin to explain it, her mother, who is with her, says firmly that in their family decisions like this are made together with the elders, and that her daughter will not be booking anything today. The daughter looks uncomfortable but says nothing. How would you respond?

What a strong answer tends to do

Asks about the family’s view instead of assuming what it is.
Finds a way to leave the door open for the daughter without undermining the mother in front of her.
Knows the limit: an adult’s own decision about her health is hers to make.
